I had purchased Valerie Worthington’s book “Training Wheels – How a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Road Trip Jumpstarted My Search for a Fulfilling Life” – the only similarities between Valerie and us was that we loved and trained Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
I like the idea of a trip to travel and train Jiu-Jitsu, but my idea was on a much smaller scale – 6 weeks (our longest school holidays) and to do it in Australia. So when Adam came home from work with the idea to travel and train, I was taken back on the suggestion of going to America!
So many questions come to mind when one’s husband says “I have enough leave to have 6 months off”. The two questions that were strong for me were 1) What about the kids schooling? 2) how do we afford such a trip? I don’t remember much more of that conversation except saying to Adam “If that’s what you want to do, then go for it!” I must have concluded that this was something he wanted to do on his own.
It wasn’t until a few days later that we discussed it further – this is something he wants to do as a Family. WOW!!! Where do we go from here? Again, so many questions… Thankfully Adam is a “researcher” (no impulse purchasing or decisions – lots and lots and lots of research) so in the days between the first conversation and this conversation he had done his research (not that he found much on a family of 4 travelling around America for 6 months), but a lot of my freak out questions/concerns were meet with answers. I think my answer was “If you are sure we can, then why not – but we have to ensure we have a plan (for those who don’t know me well – I like ROUTINE, so being well organised is a comfort to me. I didn’t want to be organised just for me but for Lilly & Kobe 6 months isn’t a long time in the big picture, but it is half of their school year.
We then discussed when would we do this? – Adam – “We have to go in their Summer, you HATE Winter!”, Me- “Yes, Yes I Do”, so this now leaves us with July 2017 or July 2018 – We had discussed 2018- Plenty of time to make sure everything is organised without feeling rushed!
I started contacting people in regards to Home-schooling, I’m sure this is going to be my next blog. I then starting asking questions in some of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu groups on Facebook – this resulted in a huge list of academies / clubs to train at.
We started discussing our plans with friends – everyone was excited for us. Whilst we were in Melbourne for “The Gathering” Adam discussed our plans with Gerald (the man who introduced him to Jiu-Jitsu), at some point in this conversation Gerald had asked why we were waiting 18 months to make such a trip?? “If you put it off then it will never happen!” were his comments. This question changed our plans!
Here we are now 6 months out from this amazing adventure!!
